![]() Where hydrogen is transported as a cryogenic liquid, boil-off is unavoidable, and you can expect to lose an average of about 1 percent of it per day. It'll leak out of pipes and valves if you distribute it that way, losing some 20 percent more volume than the methane gas that's now running through municipal pipelines – although since hydrogen is so much lighter than methane, this larger volume equates to just 15 percent of the weight. Store hydrogen in a compressed gas cylinder, and you can assume you'll lose between 0.12 percent and 0.24 percent of it every day. How does hydrogen escape into the atmosphere?Ī lot of it is leakage, according to a second report from Frazer-Nash Consultancy. What's more, the presence of hydrogen increases the concentration of both tropospheric ozone and stratospheric water vapor, boosting a "radiative forcing" effect that also pushes temperatures higher. There are fewer cleanup agents to go around, so there's a direct rise in methane concentrations, and the methane stays in the atmosphere longer. When hydrogen is present, however, those hydroxyl radicals react with the hydrogen instead. But hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere clean it up relatively quickly, while CO2 remains in the air for thousands of years, so CO2 is worse in the long run. Methane is an incredibly potent greenhouse gas, causing some 80 times more warming than an equivalent weight of CO2 over the first 20 years. Hydrogen reacts with the same tropospheric oxidants that "clean up" methane emissions. One way is by extending the lifetime of atmospheric methane. How does hydrogen act like a greenhouse gas? Indeed, a new UK Government study has put these interactions under the microscope and determined that hydrogen's Global Warming Potential (GWP) is about twice as bad as previously understood over a 100-year time period, a tonne of hydrogen in the atmosphere will warm the Earth some 11 times more than a tonne of CO2, with an uncertainty of ± 5. It carries far more energy for a given weight than lithium batteries, and it's faster to refill a tank than to charge a battery, so hydrogen is viewed as a very promising green option in several hard-to-decarbonize applications where batteries won't cut the mustard – for example, aviation, shipping and long-haul trucking.īut when it's released directly into the atmosphere, hydrogen itself can interact with other gases and vapors in the air to produce powerful warming effects. Hydrogen can be used as a clean energy carrier, and running it through a fuel cell to produce electricity produces nothing but water as a by-product. New reports show how fugitive hydrogen emissions can indirectly produce warming effects 11 times worse than those of CO2. This means you only need about half the amount of hydrogen, with double the fuel economy.Hydrogen will be one of humanity's key weapons in the war against carbon dioxide emissions, but it must be treated with care. But because a fuel cell is more than twice as efficient as an internal combustion engine, a fuel cell car travels farther on that tank of hydrogen than a traditional car would on gasoline. Since the “engine” (i.e., fuel cell) has no moving parts, you’ll never need to change the oil. They can refuel in just a few minutes and the fueling experience is almost identical to a gas station. Similar to today’s gasoline vehicles, fuel cell electric cars can have a driving range of more than 300 miles on one tank of hydrogen fuel. Fuel cell cars are very similar to traditional gasoline powered cars. There are also no pollutants emitted from the tailpipe-just water! 4. Compared to conventional gasoline vehicles, fuel cell vehicles can even reduce carbon dioxide by up to half if the hydrogen is produced by natural gas and by 90%, if the hydrogen is produced by renewable energy, such as wind and solar. Unlike batteries, fuel cells do not run down or need to recharge-as long as there’s a constant source of fuel and oxygen. Fuel cells are a clean way to produce power.įuel cells are similar to batteries in that they produce electricity without combustion or emissions. Because fuel cells can be grid-independent, they’re also an attractive option for critical load functions such as data centers, telecommunications towers, hospitals, emergency response systems, and even military applications for national defense. These range from powering buildings, cars, trucks, to portable electronic devices and backup power systems. Hydrogen and fuel cells can be used in a broad range of applications. Fuel cells can be used to power several applications.

Certainly, not everyone cited here knew of everything he was up to Malcolm Gladwell told New York, “I don’t remember much except being baffled as to who this Epstein guy was and why we were all on his plane.” Some said they never met Epstein at all, or knew of him only through his ex-girlfriend and alleged accomplice, the socialite Ghislaine Maxwell. It includes influential names listed in his black book, people he flew, funded, and schmoozed, along with others whose connections to him have drawn renewed attention. This project is meant to catalogue how Epstein’s secure footing in elite spheres helped hide his crimes. In the 1970s and early ’80s, Cohn was a favor broker for boldface chums as various as the top Democratic-machine politicians, the mobster Carmine “Lilo” Galante, Nancy Reagan, the proprietors of Studio 54, the Catholic Archdiocese of New York, Andy Warhol, the publishers Rupert Murdoch and Si Newhouse, Dershowitz, and the ambitious young real-estate developer Donald Trump. ![]() Though some observers have likened Epstein’s enigmatic rise as a glamorous social magnet to that of Jay Gatsby, a more appropriate archetype may be the fixer, sexual hedonist, and (ultimately disbarred) lawyer Roy Cohn. In the weeks since his arrest, we have learned even more about the cliques he traveled in and the way they protected him. Along with the logs of Epstein’s private plane, released in 2015, the book paints a picture of a man deeply enmeshed in the highest social circles.Ĭollectively, these documents constitute just a glance at the way society opened itself to Epstein in New York, Hollywood, and Palm Beach. He said that the book had been created by people who worked for Epstein and that it contained the names and phone numbers of more than 100 victims, plus hundreds of social contacts. In 2015, Gawker published Epstein’s “little black book,” which had surfaced in court proceedings after a former employee took it from Epstein’s home around 2005 and later tried to sell it. There are so many unanswered questions about Epstein, but one that looms over all of them is whether the bipartisan crowd who cleared a path for him will cover its tracks before we can get answers - not just Clinton and Trump and all those who drank at Epstein’s trough but also (among others) institutions like Harvard, Dalton, and the Council on Foreign Relations, or lawyers like the New York prosecutor Cy Vance Jr., whose office tried to downgrade Epstein’s sex-offender status Kenneth Starr, who tried to pressure Republican Justice Department officials to keep the Epstein case from ever being prosecuted and Alan Dershowitz, who tried to pressure the Pulitzer Prizes to shut out the Miami Herald for its epic investigative reporting that cracked open the case anew. In fact, both presidents are guilty (at the very least) of giving Epstein cover and credibility. ![]() If you watch MSNBC, this scandal is usually all about Donald Trump. If you watch Fox News, you will believe Bill Clinton was Epstein’s No. How do we explain why they looked the other way, or flattered Epstein, even as they must have noticed he was often in the company of a young harem? Easy: They got something in exchange from him, whether it was a free ride on that airborne “ Lolita Express,” some other form of monetary largesse, entrée into the extravagant celebrity soirées he hosted at his townhouse, or, possibly and harrowingly, a pound or two of female flesh. For decades, important, influential, “serious” people attended Epstein’s dinner parties, rode his private jet, and furthered the fiction that he was some kind of genius hedge-fund billionaire. But what won’t change is this: the cesspool of elites, many of them in New York, who allowed Jeffrey Epstein to flourish with impunity. Perhaps, at long last, a serial rapist and pedophile may be brought to justice, more than a dozen years after he was first charged with crimes that have brutalized countless girls and women. The Xbox One X targets 4K and it looks absolutely fantastic doing so. Thankfully, the rest of the game lives up to expectations. Xbox One X – Where’s my performance mode? Out of curiosity, we also booted this up on PC with a traditional hard drive for the game to run from and there’s no loading gap. That still left us with blank loading screens, but the wait dropped to 13 seconds on Xbox One and 9 seconds on One X. We’ve timed this first one at 37 seconds on both Xbox One machines, and because it cropped up, we loaded the game onto an external SSD. This didn’t happen in Forza Horizon 4, that’s for certain. On both Xbox One consoles, however, it unexpectedly cuts to a black loading screen. On Series X there’s an instant jump from gameplay to cutscene and then back to gameplay in another part of the world. The snag comes when you hit the first transition point. You drop from a plane into a volcano and get to take in some of the incredible scenery that Forza Horizon 5 offers as you race down its side, the game looking great on One X and decent on original Xbox One while hitting their identical 30fps targets. So, what about the last generation? Well, first impressions are mixed, and this comes from the montage of racing action that starts the game, a staple of the Forza Horizon series. In the right hands, this console can absolutely live up to Microsoft’s original pitch. For 9th November, the game will be updated to run at 1440p 30fps in Quality mode, and dropping to 1080p 60fps for performance mode. We don’t have an Xbox Series S with which to test, but from the game’s spec sheet, it will be offering a similar experience to Series X.
